Need some inspiration? Replace urgency with creativity, setting a new pace in Pretoria just as the seasons start to change.

The Jacaranda City boasts plenty of ways to spend a day surrounded by art, thoughtful creative spaces and moments of beauty. If you’d like to romanticise your city a little come March, here’s how to plan a creative day out:

Start with Art that Inspires

Kick off your morning at the Association of Arts Pretoria – a platform promoting young artists and reveling in the work of more established ones. They host regular exhibitions that showcase classic and contemporary pieces, allowing visitors to enjoy art and the cross-pollination of creative thought. Located in Nieu Muckleneuk, it’s the perfect morning out, with ample coffee stops around the area. They also host Sunday Morning Recitals, with music recitals having been introduced in the gallery in 2019.

Evidently, the audience is surrounded by the most beautiful visual art while listening to artfully played music at the same time. According to the Association of Arts Pretoria, “these are sensual and emotional experiences where different art forms are engaged in dialogue.” In the Main Gallery, you’ll find the Annual Members’ Exhibition 2026, which runs between 14 February and 7 March 2026.

From there, head to The Viewing Room Art Gallery in Brooklyn. Known for its bold, contemporary exhibitions, this double-story creative space catches the eye from the Brooklyn Circle and with good reason. Under the direction of Lucy Anastasiadis, it challenges the viewer and sparks conversations, for sure. Even just a quick visit can shift your perspective. Ultimately, that’s the magic of good art, isn’t it?

Located on the iconic South African artist, Jacobus Hendrik (Henk) Pierneef’s original homestead, the Pierneef’s Kraal guest lodge is already quite something. Add to that De Gallerij, which is where Pierneef created much of his work, and everything comes full circle. This intimate gallery’s viewing hours are from 07:30 to 16:00 from Wednesdays through to Sundays and you can contact them directly for inquiries. They also have an on-site De Kraal Restaurant, where you can enjoy delicious meals or even just a cup of coffee.

Try Something Hands-On

Whether you’re an adult or a child, a creative day becomes even more memorable when you take part in the process yourself. At Creative Play Pottery, visitors can work with clay in a relaxed, welcoming environment. There’s something deeply grounding about shaping something with your hands - a sensory experience that slows the mind and sharpens the senses. They recently hosted a Mom & Me Valentine’s Pottery Class and you’re sure to spot some exciting other events on their Facebook page as the year progresses.

Another lovely option is The Art Room Pretoria, where private and group painting sessions and workshops offer an opportunity to experiment with colour and texture, whether you consider yourself artistic or not. These kinds of spaces are less about perfection and more about expression, which makes them ideal for a relaxed afternoon activity. Founded by artist and writer, Diane Welvering in 1992, it’s a Pretoria institution and together with her daughter, Michelle, they help cultivate a love for the arts in their well-equipped art studio.

Pause for Coffee Along the Way

No creative outing is complete without a good coffee stop. Pretoria’s café culture has grown beautifully in recent years, with spaces that are as thoughtfully designed as the art galleries themselves. Rather than rushing the moment, treat coffee as part of the experience - a chance to journal, sketch, or simply sit and watch the world go by.

End the Day with a Glass of Wine

As afternoon turns to evening, ease into a wine bar where conversation flows as easily as the wine itself. A well-chosen glass at the end of a creative day feels like a quiet celebration - of ideas, inspiration and the simple pleasure of time well spent. Pretoria has a growing number of intimate wine bars and stylish venues that make the perfect closing chapter to a day like this.

Why Creative Days Matter

In a world that often moves too quickly, carving out time for creativity - whether viewing art, making something with your hands, or simply noticing beauty - can be profoundly restorative. A day like this isn’t just about places visited; it’s about how you feel when you return home: calmer, inspired and a little more connected to the world around you.

Perhaps that’s the real luxury - not distance travelled, but perspective gained.
